The Secret to Weight Loss

In the school year I watch The Biggest Loser.

In the summer I watch Extreme Makeover Weightloss Edition.

Why?  Those are my shows.  I get inspired by the people that are working so hard to change their lives.  I love seeing what they are doing that is making them lose weight and/or get healthier.  Plus...what a great way for the average person to get ideas on what I can do or make at home that might be a bit healthier than the normal chicken recipe from Betty Crocker.

In the last episode of Extreme Makeover Weightloss Edition there was a quote that the contestant said that I really embraced..."the secret is that there is no secret."

Our society is all about instant gratification.  The contestant had issues realizing that just wishing that you were skinny wasn't going to make it happen.  In fact, one of the first comments that she said as soon as she learned she was on the show was, "Am I skinny yet?".  I know that didn't seriously think that just by getting on a reality show like EMWE would make her skinny but the fact that the comment was made does show how instant we want this change to happen.  Getting healthy takes work and a lot of it.

Can't we just take a pill to fix this?  That seems to be what our culture leans toward, doesn't it?
Change doesn't come in a pill form though.  Change comes from a desire deep inside.

Change does...
  • take work. 
  • take getting up, off the comfortable and cushy couch and actually moving.  
  • mean that you may actually have to get up earlier than you want just so you know you can get that 10 minute walk in or get a few push-ups or planks done.
  • mean that you may be uncomfortable at times.
  • show that you can take a few first steps on your own.
Every morning when I come home from the gym I hear an ad on the radio for no  I don't know anything about this other than what they say (over and over) on the ads.  
...Just take a little bit before you go to bed and you will start waking up skinnier.  This is just protein, what your body wants and it works for those with medical problems too.  No exercise.  No eliminating foods.  Take it each day and you will go from a size 10 to a size 4 in no time.  Make sure you say you heard it from Katie so you can get the wholesale special....

I can hear their voices now.  They are so high pitched and squeaky.  And...I can hear the sound of people picking up their phone to call in because they want a quick fix.

The secret is that there is no secret.  We know what we need to do in order to be healthier.  Eat better and exercise.  We even have stores that are all about healthy foods and choices.  We have gyms galore but really, all you need to do is just move.  There are so many things that can be done at home with just your bodyweight that can get you started off in the right direction.  Find what works for you and have fun!
